The Minister for Defence has announced the procurement of thirty-four MRH90 helicopters to replace the Navy's Sea-Kings and Army's Blackhawks. This is in addition to the twelve MHR90s ordered last year.

The Government has already indicated it plans to reduce the number of types of helicopter operated by the Defence Force from the present 10. A defence source said that a significant factor in selecting one machine suitable for both land and maritime roles was that it would rationalise training, maintenance and other support functions. The helicopter can carry up to 18 troops as well as four crew. The MRH-90 is equipped with the latest technology and a rear ramp that can be used to load small vehicles. It is also designed for amphibious operations. Dr Nelson has said previously that if Australia were to choose to acquire more MRH-90s, they would offer synergy with the army's 22 Tiger helicopters, produced by the same company. It is expected the Sea-Kings will be retired in 2010 with the Blackhawk being phased out from 2011 to 2015. It is possible that this will also be used to rid the ADF of the troublesome Kaman Seasprite project/platform as well. More Information
