3 Squadron Australian Flying Corps

3 Squadron Australian Flying Corps

History of 3 Squadron AFC : 3 Squadron was mobilized in Australia as 2 Squadron. Due to a nomenclature clash with another 2 Squadron being raised in Egypt, the squadron was renamed to 3 Squadron Australian Flying Corps. Equipped with RE8 observation aircraft the Squadron deployed to France in September 1917 supporting Australian, British and American infantry. The Squadron formed a proud and memorable history of service. The "Ghost RE8" was a 3 Squadron RE8, the squadron was intimately involved in the last battle of the Red Baron and the subsequent medical inquiries into his death. The squadron also contained "Sylvia", an aircraft that had the most flights over German lines of an any Australian and British aircraft.

3 Squadron AFC in the Communiques : The Communiques were weekly reports compiled and published by RFC Headquarters that were known colloquilly as "comic cuts". The Communiques were a collection of achievements and incidents compiled to give an overview of the nature of air fighting on the Western Front from week to week.
