Australian Flying Corps Uniforms



The uniforms of the Australian Flying Corps were standard AIF issue with the golden badges for the AIF Rising Sun and the AFC Army Unit Patch. Pilots and Observers also wore wings. The pilots, AFC Wings and Observers, half wings with an 'O' denoting Observer.

RAAF Museum Point Cook, Australian Flying Corps uniform of Capt David W. Rutherford of No.1 Sqn AFC. The tarnished clasps on the collar are the AIF badges, now heavily oxidised. In WWI they would have been polished to a brilliant gold. Rutherford figured prominently in the action in which Lt Frank McNamara was awarded the Victoria Cross.

RAAF Museum Point Cook, Australian Flying Corps flying leathers of Lieut Alec S. Paterson of No.3 Sqn AFC. Paterson was often the observer for Capt John R. Duigan, famed for being the first Australian to build and fly an Australian designed and constructed aircraft in Australia. Together on the 22nd of April 1918, Duigan and Paterson discovered the railway-gun near Harbonnieres, the gun was later captured by Australian Forces and was taken to Australia as war booty.
