Airco DH.5 A9449

Airco DH5 A9449

This profile is taken from a photograph in the Australian War memorial collection of Capt G.C "Skipper" Wilson, flight leader of B Flight in the aircraft. The same picture also appears in Cutlacks "Official History of the Australian Flying Corps. The picture is dated November 1917 and was most likely taken at Warloy. The profile shows the thin white band at the rear of the fuselage which was the squadron marking of 2 Sqn until their re-equipment with SE5a scouts in mid December.

Gordon Campbell "Skipper" Wilson was born in Minmi, NSW in 1895 and previously to joining the AIF on the 22nd of August 1914 as an engineer he was a patternmaker in Newcastle, NSW. Wilson was to be awarded the Military Cross and Distinguished Flying Cross for his service. Tragically he was to die in an accident on the 11th of March 1929.
