    1914

    8th Aug : The steamer H.M.A.T Kanaowna leaves Townsville, Qld with the Queensland contingent of the AN&MEF.

    14th Aug : Troops leave Sydney embark in transports for Port Moresby.

    11th Sep : Australian Ground Forces clash with German reservists at Kabakaul while searching for a German radio station at Herbertshohe. Able Seaman W.G.V. Williams RAN dies, becoming the first Australian casualty of the war. Captain B.C.A. Pockley dies of wounds and becomes the first medical officer to be killed during the war.

    12th Sep : Williams is buried. Signalman Robert D. Moffat is buried at sea, he died in the attack on Bitapaka.

    13th Sep : The Union Jack is hoisted in Rabaul by men of the Naval Reserve and the proclamation of military occupation was read.

    17th Sep : The Germans, Dr Haber and Captain Von Klewitz meet with Colonel Holmes to dicuss the terms of capitulation.
