![]() This is the Statement Made by Repatriated Prisoner of War. The Administrative Headquarters of the AIF dates this report as 16th-Dec-1918. (1). Rank : 2nd Lieutenant
Circumstance of Capture :
We left our aerodrome at 3-15 am on the morning of July 28th, 1918, on an offensive patrol. At about 17 miles due East of Nieppe Forest my engine failed. I turned towards our line but was unable to reach it. I landed and set the machine on fire. The landing was right amongst the German Balloon lines. About 20 Germans covered me with revolvers and rifles and I surrendered. I was then escorted to Fleurbaix where I was taken before a German pilot and then interrogated. I refused to give him any information. By motor car I was taken to Lille and placed in the citadel, in solitary confinement. The treatment was fair but the food very "off". I remained here 4 days and was then taken to Karlsruhe where I was billeted in a hotel. I was again interrogated 2 days later with the same result. A few days later I was shifted to Karlsruhe camp where I was kept for 12 days. Then I went to Landshut, here the treatment was fair but the food insufficient. I there met 2 other Australian Flying Corps officers, Lieutenant Feez and Lieutenant Flight. I left Landshute on September 17, and was taken to Ingolstadt and met another Australian Flying Corps Officer, Lieutenant Rintoul. We left on October 18th and arrived at Kamstigall Bei Pellaz and were later joined by Lieutenant Feez and Flight. Left on December 8, by train to Danzig and then by S.S. Russ to Leith where we arrived 8 am on December 13. Entrained for Scarborough and spent the night there and left for London next morning and arrived at Kings Cross.
