This is the aircraft of Robert A. Little of 8 Sqn Royal Naval Air Service and flown during 1917. This profile is taken from a photo of a lineup of 8 Sqn RNAS Sopwith Triplanes which appears in the Windsock Datafile on the Sopwith Triplane. The photo shows VEDA, DUSTY II(N6301), SNAPP and BLYMP ( with the Y easily visible ). 8 RNAS as a squadron called their planes after female names, there were two exceptions to this, Crundall's WHITFIELD, named after his hometown and Little's BLYMP. Other names the famed 8 Naval squadron chose to emblazen their aircraft with include, Binky III, Doris, Pip, Mincol, Brenda, Hilda, Gwen, Lily, Angel, Dixie II and Dusty II, as well as others. Blymp was the nickname for his son that Robert Little used in his letters home to his wife and son. In the letters it appears as "blymph". Later accounts describing Little's Triplane name the aircraft BLIMP, including a famous painting at the Australian War Memorial depicting when Little fought seven Albatri alone. |
