This profile is of the Sopwith 1 and 1/2 Strutter A9583, used by 6 Sqn AFC as part of the Australian Flying Corps Training Wing in England. The serial number on the tailplane is difficult to discern in the photograph this profile is taken from and may be another serial similar in shape to A9583. The aircraft also appears to have the observers area closed in making it a one seater aircraft. No scarf ring mount or the leather rimmed observers cockpit area can be made out from the photograph on either of the Strutters visible. This profile is taken from a photograph in the Australian War Memorial collection with the following caption, "United Kingdom. C.1917. A version of the 1 and 1/2 Strutter aircraft known as the Sopwith Bomber. This model had a 110 Horsepower Clerget Engine and was flown by No.4 Squadron Australian Flying Corps. Note the Kangaroo emblem painted on the side." It is more likely though that the caption for this photograph is incorrect, the markings on this aircraft are more consistent with 6 Squadron AFC based at Michinhampton in 1918. |
