    Sopwith 7F.1 Snipe

    ____________________

This profile above is taken from a series of photographs from the Australian War Memorial Collection of the Sopwith Snipe E8056 flown by Captain John W. "Jack" Wright for two non operational flights in 1918. The main pilot for E8056 was 2nd Lieutentant A.G. Packer(1).

Wright wrote of the Sopwith Snipe, ".. [the Sopwith Snipe] then the last word on the British side in Scout or Fighter design. It was really a larger edition of the Camel, but without the hump which gave the Camel it's name. Powered with 200 H.P. Bentley Rotary Engines, ( which developed 260 H.P at 1400 revs ) they had a ceiling of 19000 feet and a top speed of 127 m.p.h., flying level with a war load. This gave them a slight advantage in speed over the Fokker, but we still could not get as high as the Fokkers. They [the Sopwith Snipe] were of a slightly more robust construction than the Camel, but were a little less manouevrable. However their climb rate was better than the Camel, a ceiling of 15000 feet could be reached in 30 minutes, a Camel took upwards of 45 minutes."(2)

Note on E8056 the slim font of the Flight Marking and the lower and longer bar fore of the roundal in comparison to other 4 Squadron Sopwith Snipes markings. The wheel covers may also be clear doped linen or lime based mud or sludge from the Bickendorff aerodrome.

1.Possibly incorrect, the AIF Nominal Roll has Albert George Packer of 8 Sqn AFC when he returned to Australia on the 20th of December 1918. Presumably one of the many AIF members who were given ANZAC leave in 1918.
    2. From the unpublished memoirs of J.W.Wright.
