This is a speculative profile of the Sopwith Camel D1929 flown by Arthur Cobby during June of 1918. There are numerous photographs of Cobby's aircraft in June mainly due to the presence of the AIF's official photographer Frank Hurley. One well known photograph is of Hurley lining up the camera across the guns of Cobby's Camel to a Camel opposite. Cobby's comment on watching Hurley set up the camera was, "Twig the attitude on the artist." The many photographs of "A" at this time dont have a visible serial number, it is likely that the serial was in black and indiscernable from the PC10 doping in the black and white photographs of the aircraft. Note the Chaplin aluminium cutout on the plywood under the cockpit. Cobby claimed 12 victories in D1929 comprising two in May and ten in June of 1918. Cobbys 13th victory was of Uffz Max Mertens on June 19th. The tail skid of Mertens Pfalz DIII is in the Australian War Memorial. |
