    Sopwith F.1 Camel

    ____________________

This is a profile of the Sopwith Camel of 6(T) Sqn Australian Flying Corps flown by the Australian ace Garnet Malley while he was a Fighting Instructor with C Flight. The aircraft of the fighting instructors were painted in whites and reds to distinguish them from the training aircraft and so they were readily viewable by the students while in mock dogfights.

This aircraft went through two changes that are apparent in photographs from the AWM collection, in an early photograph of the aircraft the cowl appears to be in clean metal, but in later photographs the cowl has been painted white. This profile depicts the aircraft in the later photograph with the white cowl.

Unlike the white and black checked Sopwith Camel Cobby used while a fighting instructor with 6 Sqn, the underwings of Malleys Sopwith Camel appear to still be CDL. This differance also is depicted amongst profiles by other artists of the two aircraft. "Tab" Pflaum also flew a white Sopwith Camel while a fighting instructor. Pflaum's Camel differed in that it had a red band fore of the roundal and a white emu insignia inside the band.
