This is the aircraft of Major Roderic Stanley "Breguet" Dallas of 40 Sqn RAF in 1918. The aircraft's serial number is D3511. Dallas scored at least five victories in this aircraft through the period of 2nd of May 1918 to the 22nd of May 1918. Including one Destroyed in flames, two destroyed and two claimed out of control. The photograph of D3511 in it's distinctive camouflage pattern appears in many aviation books. Here it is depicted as being of two tones but larger pictures show three tones. The colours of the secondary tones have been speculated as tans or greens, though all colour choices are too a large extent speculative. Apparently the camouflage scheme was originally applied to aid in camouflage at night, Mike Muth has speculated that the darker colour was black and the remaining lighter tones are PC10 and a shade of brown. Others have speculated that the base colour is PC10 and the lighter tones are French colours. Another possibility is that the camouflaging is similar to the later camouflage worn by the Sopwith Salamander. |
